I've found that rangers are usually fairly sensible in the backcountry. Sounds like you were making a considerate choice.

There are other things one can do to reduce your impact. Might think about avoiding a tent altogether if the weather permits.

Georgeous pictures, by the way!

Nice! So if the water is so high this year, hopefully the waterfalls will still be running strong when we're out there in 2 weeks!

About color...

I, too, sometimes just feel more like working in BW than in color. To some extent, you might want to just go with that flow a bit when it happens, Edie. Not every photograph is necessarily better in color, and some subjects - or at least certain ways of seeing them - seem to "want" to be BW.

Part of the difficulty of color, at least sometimes, is that it is more difficult to create a photograph that can be seen as something that transcends simple (he laughs) reality, and which can also be viewed as a sort of abstract thing as well. Your Art Wolfe image is, I think, a fine and obvious example of this. I know that I'm looking at a "real" thing in that photograph, but that really isn't what interests me most about it - I'm drawn to the forms and the arrangement of the stars and to the color relationships among them and so forth.

Anyway, keep shooting! :-)

Cool! They must have finally opened the road to Saddlebag. It was still closed when I was there last Wednesday, though the road crew was teasing me. When I drove up the gate was open and I was about to start up when the guys by the side of the road waved me off.

North Peak is a really fine and impressive peak from a number of angles. I did a late season pack trip into Twenty Lakes Basin a couple years back in mid-October. (It was memorable for many reasons but partly because as we loaded up our packs by the car one of us had the opportunity to ask, "Should we start now or wait until it stops snowing?" We didn't wait.)

Reminds me of something I just read yesterday: http://littlebrownmushroom.wordpress.com/2010/06/29/this-is-annoying/

I find your litmus test for what you allow people to use and what you don't intriguing since you apply both objective and subjective methods to determining whether or not to charge or allow people to use the photos.

Can't wait to be out in Yosemite in a few weeks!

I'll be very interested to read what you think of their service. I've never discovered any of my photos used without my permission or credit, but it's impossible to know who may have swiped them without my knowledge.

Edie,

Where abouts did you take the photo from I was up the entire weekend and got some of the lower fall but from the lower landing area just below the falls under the shade of the rocks as to not get the camera and lens to wet.

Thanks
