From the Vault: Uzume dances for Amateratsu

P1110074.jpg

Taken January 11, 2007. Ame-no-Usume, a Kami of Japanese Shinto, danced to draw Amateratsu from the cave in which she was hiding. As I watched from Cooks Meadow, the sun retreated behind the mountains to the west and a wind kicked up snow on the visor of Half Dome. It danced and swirled, and suddenly a last ray of sunlight illuminated the snow.

El Capitan Alpen Glow

It was *cold* at Tunnel View tonight. Next time I’m taking a few blankets and some hot tea with me. I’m glad I stayed, though, because I was rewarded with this lovely view of alpen glow on El Capitan, the first time I’d ever seen it. Dave, you should have stayed, pal. Print available here.

Bon Hiver!

Lake of the Dome

To the north of Lower Cathedral lake is Medlicott Dome, and nestles against its eastern flank are two small lakes. In May of 2006 I returned to Cathedral Lakes and made the trek up to the Lakes of the Dome. Note the snow on Tressider Peak; Tioga Pass had opened on May 11th due to a shortfall of snow. There was only 40% of average snowpack in the winter of 2006/07.

From the vault: Horsetail Falls

After the ‘natural firefalls’ have ended, and all the photographers have packed away their lenses and collapsed their tripods, Horsetail Falls still has a thing or two to show us who’ve stayed behind. This image was made in March of 2007. “Oh won’t you sta-a-ay, just a little bit lo-o-onger?

From the Vault: Cathedral Peak, July 22, 2006

If memory serves, this was the very first time I visited Lower Cathedral Lake.  It would be the first place I would use the Little Red Tent.   See more photos from this trip here.

Morning brew with a view

Another Black Friday image. This was shot from Glacier Point at sunset as the moon was rising. I love the way shadows creep across the face of Half Dome as the sun falls at the end of the day.

From the vault: sublime grasses.

Smokey Day at Yosemite

Today was rather smokey here in Yosemite Valley. I could smell, and can still smell, woodsmoke. I pity asthmatics on days like this. I’m not too sure where the smoke was coming from. I assume it was a controlled burn. It made for an interesting sunset up at Glacier Point. While I was there, I met three workers from San Diego; They were modifying the Taft Point/Sentinel Dome parking area for ADA compliance. To Steve and his crew, thank you. My mother lost her right leg to artery disease, and was confined to a wheel chair in the last years of her life. It’s good to know NPS is trying to make more of the park accessible to folks in wheelchairs. Two of his crew had never been to Yosemite before, and so this was a treat for them. They graciously allowed me to snap a picture of them. Best of luck to you, guys, and be safe!
