This shot was taken in January of 2007 in San Juan Bautista, CA. What drew me initially was the richness of the cactus fruit; they glowed in the sun, plump and displaying beautiful brick reds, mauves, and gentle yellows. There’s a wonderful Yiddish word used to describe large women: zaftig, and it literally means “juicy”. I knew that this would make a good black and white image, but I really wanted to convey the “zaftig-ness” of those fruits. I hope I’ve succeeded.
