Charcoal Kilns, near Wildrose

Here’s another composition of the charcoal kilns near Wildrose. Because they were only used for production for three years, they are the best preserved kilns of their type in the west. They really are handsome structures, but a challenge to photograph. There is a parking lot directly to the right of this image. They run roughly north-south, and this image shows the western faces of the kilns. Note the hills covered with trees in the distance. Those are pinion pines, and were cut to be burned for charcoal which was used to smelt silver and lead ore 25 miles away.

Yes, they still smell of smoke inside, over 130 years later.
