Death Valley: Charcoal Kilns, sunset.

These are kilns used to make charcoal from pinion pines near Wildrose. They were designed by the Swiss, and built by Chinese laborers. The charcoal produced was used to smelt ore at a nearby mine, saving shipping cost. There are 10 of them in a row, and are about 20′ tall by rough guesstimate.



Edie, are these the kilns that are on the way up to the trailhead to Telescope Peak? i thought they were fascinating when we were up there a couple of years ago.
These are all fantastic shots and representations of Death Valley.
