G. Dan Mitchell has kindly consented to allow me to display this stunning image of Iceberg Lake. Dan is a fellow backpacking photographer here in the Sierra Nevada, and the only person ever to describe me as “peripatetic”. Thanks Dan! (At least he didn’t call me “somnambulant”).
Hi Edie: Glad you like this one, and thanks for posting about it.
I’ll share two little stories about the photo.
This is Iceberg Lake, which is one of two alpine lakes that lie beneath the east face of the Minarets and along an unofficial route between Ediza Lake and Minaret Lake. It had been quite a few years since I had crossed that route, so when I was at Ediza a couple years ago I decided to head up that way one morning, with a plan of visiting both lakes. However, when I got to Iceberg, even though it was before noon I could tell that there was going to be “weather,” and soon – so I did some photography there and then hightailed it back to my camp almost before the rain/hail started.
I had not done anything with this photo right after the trip. When I made the exposures I was actually taking a series of images as part of a panoramic stitch – and the stitch ultimately did not look promising when I first worked on it. But I kept thinking about this place and this photograph and this week I finally decided to go back and take a look. Turns out I was right about the panorama – it doesn’t really “work” for me. But in working on the panorama I decided to look more closely at sections of the overall image to see what might be there… and I “found” this composition.
Take care,
Dan
Beautiful image G Dan Mitchell! I wish I was there right now. I’m really tired of the hot weather we have been experiencing up here in the Sierra Foothill’s. At least, it has finally dropped below 100 for the past 2 days!
